What Can (and Can't) Go in a Junk Removal Pickup in St. Louis

Schaefer Home Solutions · Updated 2026

Most first-time junk removal customers aren't sure what they can actually put on the truck. Some of that comes down to state and local disposal regulations, not company preference, so it helps to know the difference before pickup day. Here's a straight answer.

What we take

The bulk of what we haul falls into a few categories: furniture (couches, mattresses, dressers, tables), old appliances (washers, dryers, refrigerators, stoves), electronics (TVs, computers, printers), yard debris (branches, brush, old fencing), construction debris (drywall, flooring, cabinets from a remodel), and full property cleanouts (estate, foreclosure, or general decluttering). If it's heavy, awkward, or you just don't want to deal with loading it yourself, that's usually exactly what we're for.

What we can't take (and why)

A handful of item categories are regulated by state and local hazardous waste rules, and reputable junk removal companies won't (and legally can't) put them on a standard truck:

Items with special handling

A few things aren't banned outright but do need extra care, and sometimes a small added fee: refrigerant-containing appliances (refrigerators, freezers, AC units) require EPA-compliant refrigerant recovery before disposal, and mattresses in some cases require special bagging depending on the disposal facility. None of this means we can't take them, it just affects the process slightly.

What actually affects your quote

People sometimes assume pricing is based on counting individual items, but it's really driven by total volume (how much of the truck it fills), how much labor is involved getting it out (stairs, tight hallways, long carries), and whether any item needs special handling per the section above. A truckload of small boxes and a single oversized sectional sofa can end up costing similarly if they take up the same space and effort.

Making pickup day easy

If you can, group items together in one accessible area beforehand, and flag anything that might fall into the hazardous or special-handling categories ahead of time so we can plan for it. Reach out for a free estimate and tell us roughly what you're getting rid of; we'll give you a straight number before anything gets loaded.
